Meet the team - Andrea Dow

Andrea Dow • Apr 05, 2024

My name is Andrea Dow. I am originally from East Kilbride but moved to Lanark when I got married. Its semi-rural and my husband and I are very happy there. We enjoy all things outdoors – cycling, hillwalking, a bit of scrambling, snowboarding but I also love the gym too. That’s my ‘happy place’ and there’s nothing better after a stressful or tiring day, than to hash it out in one of the xtreme fit classes at my local gym.  I come from a big family, my close friends and family are really important to me – I love a good ‘walk and talk’ – then a pint and burger, or better yet, coffee and cake.

I joined Armet in 2021, and I’ve been very happy here. It is a lovely team to work with, and I feel like we have an open, friendly, approachable but professional work environment.  I am an ACCA qualified accountant, in my previous role I gained a lot of experience in the production of management accounts for small and medium businesses.  I was keen, to develop my taxation knowledge and so when an opportunity came up to work in practice, I jumped at the chance. That was a number of years ago now, but I can say that the move to Armet, has been a really happy and good one for me.  It’s been a pleasure getting to know Ursula and Laura, and learn from the wealth of experience they both bring to the table, but it’s also been really lovely meeting our clients.

I co-ran a small online retail business, with my business partner, for about 7 years and it gives me a bit of an insight into how small business owners can sometimes feel.  An understanding of how stressful, exhausting, and all-consuming it can be at times.  It can be difficult to take a step back, evaluate what we want or need, and figure out what we need to do, to achieve that.  Sometimes a wee meeting with your accountant is actually a great opportunity, to take that step back, and get back in control. And if I can help someone to do that, it gives me a real sense of satisfaction and joy.

I’ve sold a property, do I need to do a Capital Gains Tax return?
By Laura Arbuckle 01 Feb, 2024
My residential landlord clients would probably tell you that they are fed up of hearing about HMRC’s latest requirements for reporting Capital Gains Tax. At every accounts review meeting I make sure they are fully aware that in the event they sell their residential rental property, they must complete a return and pay any tax that is likely to be due within 60 days of the sale being agreed.

What goals should I set for myself?
By Laura Arbuckle 23 Mar, 2022
We all know that at the start of the year we should be setting goals and they should be “SMART”, that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound (or even SMARTER if you are going to Evaluate and Review them). What happens if our goals don't drive the right decisions?
